Image: "Unterwegs / On the Way" by Ella Ponizovsky Bergelson (2019, wall paint on concrete, Neukölln, Berlin). Part of a series of wall-writings created by Ella Ponizovsky Bergelson in 2018 and 2019 in many public places in Berlin. The multilingual text reads in German: 'Immer noch unterwegs', in Yiddish: 'נאך אונטערוועגן', and in Arabic: 'مازلت في الطريق', which translates into English: 'still on the way'. The Translation Studies Hub (TS Hub) serves as a platform for discussion about the theories, histories, and practice of translation at the University of Washington and in the broader Seattle community. Since its founding in 2019, the TS Hub has regularly organized public lectures with practitioners and scholars of translation, held colloquia and workshops for faculty, students, and members of the public, and developed courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels in translation studies at UW. Across its projects, the TS Hub has centered on one core goal: the increase, across the university, of translation literacy—the cultivation of a toolkit that enables the critical foregrounding of the power dynamics, social processes, and linguistic interplay that lie at the core of translation as a cultural enterprise.
The TS Hub aims to further this goal through the creation in 2024-2025 of an undergraduate minor and graduate certificate in Translation Studies.
